The Regional Council of the Barcelona region of Berguedà has discovered 11 skeletons in the area of the medieval castle of Berga after raising the pool of the old Mesón del Castillo hotel, which was open from 1940 to 1988.

The find has been produced in full archaeological works of the Castle of Berga to remodel the building towards a similar disposition to the one it originally had. The place where the corpses were found coincided with the site of the old church of Santa Eulalia, located inside the castle and collapsed in 1655.

Experts have dated the burial of the bodies to the 16th century, although they acknowledge that “they could even be earlier.”

“The place where they were found was the place where the corpses of the inhabitants of medieval Berga were deposited,” they explain on the website of the county council. Thus, “We do not rule out locating more remains”, they have added.

Other Findings

In the works of remodeling the castle, archaeologists have discovered new remains of the original building, such as an 18th century water well or the access stairs to the ruined church in the 17th century.

The work, which has cost 52,175.08 euros, has included the replanting a tree located in the castle that was given by the town of Gernika (Vizcaya) in 1992 to symbolize the brotherhood between the two municipalities.
