SK Rapid Vienna and head coach Peter Stöger have agreed to end their contract early. The club announced the mutual decision on March 31, 2026. Stöger, who was sacked from day-to-day duties back in late November 2025, is now fully free to take on new challenges.

The 59-year-old Viennese had a short but notable spell as Rapid’s coach. He took charge in June 2025 with a deal running until summer 2027. During his time, he oversaw 27 official matches and guided the team through the early stages of the UEFA Conference League, reaching the league phase for three rounds.

Stöger is no stranger to the green-and-white colors. As a player from July 1995 to November 1997, he made 113 appearances and scored 22 goals. In his very first season, he helped Rapid win the Austrian championship and reach the final of the European Cup Winners’ Cup.

The club thanked him for his always professional cooperation. In their statement, officials wished him “only the best” for his private and professional future. They also said he will always be a welcome guest at the Allianz Stadium.

Stöger’s last win as Rapid coach came in early November 2025 against Sturm Graz. However, a difficult run of results led to his removal from coaching responsibilities just five months into the job. The early termination now formalizes the end of his contract.

For Rapid fans, this marks the official close of a chapter that began with high hopes. Many remember Stöger fondly as a former player who returned as coach with deep ties to the club. His brief tenure brought some European progress but ultimately couldn’t deliver consistent domestic success.

The decision comes as the Austrian Bundesliga season continues. Rapid will now look ahead with their current coaching setup while searching for long-term stability. Stöger, turning 60 soon, leaves with the opportunity to explore new projects, possibly back in Austria or abroad.

This amicable split shows both sides handled a tough situation with respect. Rapid emphasized the positive aspects of their working relationship, even as they move forward.

Peter Stöger’s story with SK Rapid is one of loyalty and passion. From champion player to head coach and now a free agent, he remains a respected figure in Viennese football. Fans will be curious to see where his next chapter takes him.

For now, the focus at Hütteldorf shifts to the pitch and building on the foundation laid during his time. The club has already wished him well, and many supporters are likely doing the same.

It’s a reminder of how quickly things can change in football. One day you’re leading training, the next you’re planning your next move. Stöger’s early exit opens doors for everyone involved. The coming weeks should bring more clarity on Rapid’s coaching future and Stöger’s plans.
