The Last Kingdom will end with season 5

Netflix will be shutting down The Last Kingdom television series based on Bernard Cornwell’s bestselling The Saxon Stories.

UK film, television and theater production company Carnival Films has confirmed that season 5 of The Last Kingdom will be the last, ending a historic drama that started on the BBC six years ago now. Filming for the series is underway in Hungary with ten episodes focusing on the latest adventures of Uhtred de Bebbanburg, a warrior born Saxon but raised as a Danish. Charged with training King Edward’s eldest son Aethelstan as a warrior, Uhtred’s ambition will have an even higher purpose. But to fulfill this destiny, he will have to face his greatest enemy and suffer his greatest loss.

This final season is based on the ninth and tenth volumes of Bernard Cornwell’s 13-part literary saga. Producer Nigel Marchant said: “With such a loyal fan base, we’re excited to give viewers a chance to follow Uhtred on the next stage of his epic quest, where not everyone survives.“.
