OnePlus is ending software support for its OnePlus 6 and 6T after 3 major Android updates

Smartphone manufacturers provide fairly limited support for their devices, but it must be admitted that the duration of support has increased significantly in recent years. Some do better than others on this point. Today, for example, OnePlus announces the end of support for its OnePlus 6 and 6T.

OnePlus ends software support for its OnePlus 6 and 6T

It’s been a few years now since the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T were released. It is therefore not really surprising to learn that the Chinese manufacturer has just announced the end of software support for these two devices.

Both of these models were released about 3 years ago, and usually most Android device manufacturers support their products for about 2-3 years when it comes to major software updates.

In other words, OnePlus remains average. The brand has kept its word by offering 3 major updates to these two devices. In fact, it is difficult to find fault with this decision, even if we understand that some owners of this generation may be disappointed.

After 3 major Android updates

In a post on its forum, OnePlus writes: “After three major updates and over three years of updates in total, around 60 closed betas and over 30 public betas, it’s time to close a chapter and to announce the end of official software support for the OnePlus 6 and 6T.” Keep in mind that this also applies to security updates.

The company had changed its approach when it launched the OnePlus 8, explained that it would now offer at least four years of security updates and three years of major updates, but that only applies to OnePlus 8 and newer devices.

Logically therefore, the OnePlus 6 and 6T are not affected. And next year it should be the turn of the OnePlus 7 and 7T.
