Threads will be Meta’s own version to compete with Twitter. The app has been in development for the past few months and now has an official release date for download in the iOS and Android digital stores.
The social network is not yet available for download, but from July 6, 2023, users will have the opportunity to access it and start testing it from their devices.
What is Threads
This application is “our answer to Twitter”, as stated by a Meta manager in a meeting with its employees.
The origin of this platform comes about because the company talked to content creators and public figures about the interest of having a social network that “is managed in a sensible way, that they believe they can trust and rely on for distribution”.
All this amid the constant changes that Elon Musk’s application has had, such as the inclusion of paid subscriptions. So the goal is for this app to have “security, ease of use and reliability” as basic elements, to ensure that creators have a “stable place to build and grow their audience.”
The codename under which it was being developed was Project 92, but a few weeks ago The Verge had access to a first image and there it was known that Threads would be the final name, which was confirmed with the publication of the application in the App Store and Google Play Store.
This social network will base its content on text publications, mixed with images and videos, with interaction options such as comments, reply, like or share, in an interface very similar to that of Twitter.
There will also be an options menu at the bottom to access different options such as search, profile, a notifications section and a central one to create a publication.
A key point in Threads is that to create an account it will be necessary to link the Instagram profile. This will be possible, thanks to a decentralized protocol called ActivityPub, which will allow you to carry the followers and followings you have in the other application.
“Threads is the space where communities come together in various discussions, from topics that interest you today to those that will be trending in the future. Whatever your interest, you can follow your favorite creators and connect directly with them and other like-minded people, or create a loyal follower base of your own to share your ideas, opinions and creativity with the world,” is the description that accompanies the app on the Google Play Store.
The App Store informs what kind of user data this social network will collect, it will take information on health and fitness, financial, browsing history, purchases, identifiers, photos, audios, contacts, calendar, among others. Data that usually collect applications of this type, as well as the warning of being able to share them with third parties.
The date for users to have it on their phones is Thursday, July 6, both on iOS and Android devices. For now it is possible to find it in digital stores and add it to the wish list to receive a download notification when it is available.
