An iMessage bug affects read receipts. Even deactivated manually, these are sometimes still transmitted.

Software bugs are commonplace, with widely varying consequences for users. This can range from a simple display bug to rendering the affected application completely unusable. Worse yet, sometimes it can lead to personal data leaks.

Today it is an application from Apple, iMessage, which suffers from a rather annoying bug. Indeed, read receipts are always transmitted even if they are deactivated in the application.

iMessage bug affects read receipts

Read receipts are a double-edged sword. It is always good to know when your messages have been delivered and read, but at the same time, some people can react very badly when messages have been read but there has been no response given.

It is for this reason that some users sometimes choose to disable these read receipts. At least the situation thus remains less ambiguous.

That being said, according to a recent report from Macworld, a strange bug is currently affecting the Apple iMessage app. This would continue to show read receipts even when the user turned the feature off.

Even deactivated manually, these are sometimes still transmitted

This is apparently an issue that dates back to previous versions of iOS and iPadOS, but is still present in iOS 15 and it doesn’t look like a fix is imminent. In other words, this means that even if you turn off read receipts, there is a good chance that the sender can still see whether their messages have been read or not.

At present, there does not appear to be a solution to this problem. However, some users have managed to get rid of it simply by restarting their iPhone, but only temporarily.

And since it is difficult to know precisely when this bug will show up or not, the reboot solution is clearly not the best option. And anyway, it’s never a good thing to restart your smartphone several times a day.
