A developer manages to install CarPlay in his Tesla thanks to a Raspberry Pi with a modified version of Android!
Tesla Cars feature a large screen for their infotainment system. That would be perfect support for platforms like Apple CarPlay or Google Android Auto.
However, CarPlay is not supported by Tesla and we must admit that it would be rather surprising if the manufacturer offered this option to its customers. But that didn’t stop a developer from embarking on the adventure.

Polish developer Michał Gapiński thought that rather than waiting to see if Tesla wants to integrate CarPlay support into its cars, it was more interesting to do it itself.
And what’s interesting is that Michal Gapinski managed to make it all work using a Raspberry Pi running on a modified version of Android. In a way, it’s quite ironic that this circumvention method uses non-Apple products and services.

Anyway, if the result is the expected one, namely an Apple CarPlay that works perfectly on a Tesla, the installation is far from ideal. The project is still in its infancy.
Currently, the main limitation of the system is that you have to use a mouse connected to the Raspberry Pi to navigate through the CarPlay interface, which ultimately cancels out all the interest of CarPlay, which is intended to be a system of touchscreen infotainment for the car.
The good news, however, according to Michał Gapiński, is that the developer has decided to go public with his method once it gets a little more polished. Impossible to know when this will take place, but all this could be very interesting for the owners of Tesla who have an iPhone and who like to tinker.
Let’s also hope that the brand will eventually make its cars compatible with Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto, that would be a good thing.
