The images of the 41-year-old journalist of British nationality reflect the consequences of the arrival of the Taliban in Afghanistan, who have very strict policies for women.
Ward took to the streets of Kabul on Monday to report on the situation in the city, just hours after being taken over by the Taliban. However, she had to do so by dressing conservatively for fear of retaliation.
“This is a show that I honestly thought I would never see. Dozens of Taliban fighters, and right behind us, in the US Embassy compound,” Ward said in a connection with the presenters of New Day, Jon Berman and Brianna Keilar.
“I have seen some women, but I will say that I have seen far fewer women than I would normally see walking the streets of Kabul. The women you see walking the streets of Kabul now tend to dress more conservatively than when they walked the streets of Kabul yesterday. I have seen more burqas today than I have seen in a long time. Obviously, I am dressed in a very different way than I would normally dress to walk the streets of Kabul”, she added.
During the CNN journalist’s report, it was noted that her presence bothered some of the Taliban with whom she spoke. At one point she was specifically asked to step aside because she was a woman.
