San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance led his team to a 28-21 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Friday in week one of the NFL preseason.

Lance stayed on the field in the first quarter. The 22-year-old showed speed to get out of the pocket of protection in moments of urgency. He passed for 92 yards, completed 4 of 5 passes and hit a touchdown pass to Danny Gray.

For the Packers, four-time NFL Most Valuable Player Aaron Rodgers sat on the bench. Jordan Love appeared at the controls, who suffered in the first half. He had three interceptions, though he also had two passes into the end zone.

Receiver Romeo Doubs, a 22-year-old rookie taken in the fourth round of this year’s Draft, stood out in Green Bay’s offense.

Starting in the second quarter, Nate Sudfeld, former passer for the Eagles, took charge of the 49ers’ attack, helping with a touchdown pass so that his team led 20-14 at halftime.

In the second half, in the last period, the Packers turned the score around 21-20 with Danny Etling at quarterback, who connected with Amari Rodgers in the end zone.

The 49ers regained the lead with the entry of Brock Purdy, their third quarterback, who led a 69-yard drive that ended with a touchdown pass to win 28-21.

In another game, the Cleveland Browns beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 24-13. Browns starting quarterback Deshaun Watson played the first quarter, completing only one pass for five attempts and gaining seven yards on the three drives he led.

Watson awaits the outcome of the appeal filed by the NFL after a Disciplinary Committee appointed by the league and the Players Association determined to punish him with six games of the 2022 season, a ruling with which the NFL disagreed.

The quarterback faces this situation after the accusations of sexual misconduct against 24 women in massage therapies that he received with his former team, the Houston Texans, in 2021.

The appeal filed by the NFL and that will be resolved in the next few days could bring Watson a one-year suspension.

The Jaguars also used their primary quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, for the first 15 minutes; he had 95 yards on 6-of-12 completions; he had an entry.

Earlier the New York Jets triumphed 24-21 over the Philadelphia Eagles. In the first quarter the Jets lost their starting quarterback, Zach Wilson, to a knee injury.
