Corey Phelan was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in April. Despite having received the corresponding treatment, the Philadelphia Phillies have reported that after months of fighting, Corey lost his battle against the disease.

The world of sports and American society in general mourn this Friday the death of Corey Phelan, a promising 20-year-old baseball player. The youngster was diagnosed with lymphoma last April and, after receiving the corresponding treatment and experiencing a slight improvement in the following months, the team for which he played has finally confirmed that the pitcher has lost his battle against the disease this week.

Phelan joined the Philadelphia Phillies roster two years ago, a club that competes in the lower divisions of Major League Baseball. A month after his ailment was made public, the athlete momentarily returned to the bench to closely encourage his teammates in one of the remaining matches for the end of the season. “He has been great, I cannot express in words how great it has been to come back”, he explained before the microphones that wanted to know his sensations in his brief return to the stadiums.

The Phillies and the MLB, which organizes the regular competition, have issued two statements to publicly mourn the death of Corey Phelan, as well as to pay tribute to a “very special person”, in the words of the director of the club’s academy, Preston Mattingly, who has described the late player, a native of New York, as an outgoing, smiling and enthusiastic young man.

“Corey was and always will be a very special person. His smile lit up any room and anyone who interacted with him loved meeting him. The memory of him will live on forever, especially in the Phillies family,” he said.
