Rafael Nadal will not play his Wimbledon semifinal match against Nick Kyrgios on Friday. The Iberian gave a press conference on Thursday to announce his withdrawal from the match against the Australian, due to the abdominal injury he suffered in his quarterfinal match against Taylor Fritz.
According to British media, the maximum male Grand Slam champion made the decision after consulting with his medical team, taking into account that he has a 7-millimeter tear in his abdomen, so the intention is not to take risks and not aggravate the situation.
“I have a torn abdominal and I run a huge risk of making it worse if I continue playing. I’ve been thinking about this situation all day and last night, and I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s practically impossible to win two games at this level with a torn abdominal and knowing that, in the best case scenario, if I win tomorrow, I won’t I would arrive in the best shape on Sunday, ”were Nadal’s words at a press conference.
For ‘Rafa’, this is the seventh time in his career that he decides not to show up for a match during a tournament. The last one was in 2019 at the Paris Masters when he had to play against Denis Shapovalov for the semifinals, while it is the second time he has done so in a Grand Slam: in 2016 he did not play his match against Marcel Granollers for the third round of Roland Garros.
In this way, Nadal ends his illusion of being able to win the ‘Grand Slam Calendar’ this year , that is, win the four major tournaments during the same season. However, he is left with the satisfaction that for the first time in his career he was able to win Australia and Roland Garros in the same year.
