The Czech Petra Kvitova, fourth favorite, left the Spanish Garbiñe Muguruza without a title by beating her in the Doha final 6-2 and 6-1, as happened in the 2018 edition on the same stage.
The 30-year-old Czech, tenth in the world, ended the good run and the excellent level of the Spanish, who was on the doorstep of the trophy. Garbiñe, who has accumulated seven titles, has not won a WTA competition since winning in Monterrey in 2019.
Muguruza has not won a WTA title since Monterrey 2019
Four Grand Slam successes came together in the last match in Doha. Both from Garbiñe, at Wimbledon 2017 and Roland Garros 2015, and as many from Kvitova, who reigned on the grass of London in 2014 and 2011.
The Czech proved to have taken the measure to the Spanish. In five previous matches he had won four. Only in the first of them did the victory end on Muguruza’s side. This Saturday, as happened in the 2018 final, also in Doha, the last time they met, the success was for the Central European.
In 67 minutes Petra Kvitova sealed the victory. After an even start (2-2), the Czech stepped on the accelerator and the Spanish could not follow. He scored four games in a row to close the first set.
Garbiñe seemed to react, who cut the bleeding with a break at the beginning of the second set. But it was not like that. Kvitova kept up her pace and won the next six sets at a stretch to close out the win.
Petra Kvitova conquered the 28th title in her career, the first since Sydney 2019. The successes have been resisting lately to Muguruza, who already lost the final in Melbourne this year.
