Raúl Enríquez Arámbula was sentenced to almost three months in prison for trying to take two Mexican women to the United States in his vehicle

Raúl Enríquez Arámbula , the top scorer in the history of the Xolos de Tijuana team in the MX League, was sentenced this Monday for trafficking a couple of undocumented people who were in Mexico trying to enter the United States.

Arambula, who scored 81 goals in 203 matches between 2007 and 2013, was sentenced to 86 days in prison – which he has already served – after pleading guilty to a charge related to immigrant smuggling, the San Diego Union Tribune reported.

The 37-year-old former soccer player had been arrested on September 11 when two women tried to enter American territory in their vehicle at the Otay Mesa entry point in California.

According to the newspaper , the women, of Mexican nationality, were hiding with a sheet in the back of the vehicle that the former front man was driving.

Enríquez, who had presented a business and tourist visa to enter the United States , initially denied knowing the women were in his vehicle , but it was the women who told investigators that he had told them they were five minutes from crossing.

The corresponding sentence, handed down by District Judge Thomas Whelan, was suggested by the player’s defense attorney, who up to that point had no criminal record in the US.

Enríquez was part of the Xolos de Tijuana that won the only title in its history in the first division of Mexico by winning the Apertura Tournament in 2012 and in addition to his stay with La Jauría, he also played for other teams in the MX League such as Dorados from Sinaloa, Chiapas FC or FC Juárez, where he retired in 2018.
