Lewis Hamilton has backed Max Verstappen to push for another Formula 1 World Championship after the Red Bull driver extended his lead with victory at the French Grand Prix.
The defending champion came ahead of both English Mercedes drivers making the most of Charles Leclerc’s spin and race retirement error on lap 18 at Circuit Paul Ricard.
“It’s been great to see the pace from Ferrari this year. I feel really bad for Charles who has been doing a great job, as well as Carlos Sainz,” the Silver Arrows Briton told the media.
In that sense, the seven-time world champion continued: “It is not easy to have that rhythm and that performance and maintain it. It is hard work and I feel sorry for the whole team because I know what it can feel like. But they are a great team” .
Finally, Hamilton concluded: “There are huge gaps, so everything flows quite well for Verstappen in general. But a lot can go wrong later on, so I would advise them to keep pushing.”
