Gardner said he was embarrassed after the Yankees’ 12-2 loss to the Rays in the penultimate game of the regular season.

After losing 12-2 to the Tampa Bay Rays , outifelder Brett Gardner said he was disappointed and ashamed of his performance . With the defeat, the New York Yankees could not secure their participation in the Wild Card Game of the American League .

Gardner knows the importance of tomorrow’s game, the last of the regular season, in keeping his playoff hopes alive.

“We must win. As simple as that. It’s game 162 and we don’t know what the future holds, but we still control our destiny in some way , ”the outfielder said.

Gardner has a .167 batting average against the Rays and the Yankees have lost 11 of the 17 games they have played so far.

“We play against one of our great rivals. If we are going to make the playoffs and get where we want to go, they are a team we must beat . I am disappointed in the way we play today. I hope tomorrow is better ”, declared Gardner at the end of the game.

Early Advantage

When asked what influenced the loss, the 2016 Gold Glove claimed that early lead was paramount. The Rays took the lead during the first inning with the first of Brandon Lowe’s three home runs .

“ They had three runs in the first inning . They continued adding and we had some situations in which we did not convert. We played against a great team and we were beaten in every facet of the game, ”said Gardner.
