Germany’s Alexander Zverev recovered from a two-point deficit in the first set and advanced to the second round of the Mexican Tennis Open on Monday after beating Carlos Alcaraz Garfia 6-3 and 6-1.

The world number seven and second seed in the tournament held in the Acapulco resort on hard courts, was taken aback in the first set when Alcaraz won the first two games with an ace serve and a service break.

But the German recovered and with all his experience he broke the 17-year-old’s serve four times and with four aces he won the first set.

For the second set, things were easier for Zverev, who broke Alcaraz’s serve twice and with three consecutive aces in the last game, he decisively won the match.

In the second round, Zverev will face the winner of the match between American Steve Johnson and Serbian Lasio Djere.

In other matches on Monday, Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime eliminated American Tennys Sandgren, German Dominik Koepfer beat Mexican Gerardo López Villaseñor and American John Isner defeated Italian Salvatore Caruso.
