Two Mexican fans surprise Sam Smith with a personalized Dr. Simi, reviving a tradition of concert gifts.
Sam Smith’s career continues to soar, with a full schedule that has him touring Latin America, where he has four concerts scheduled in Mexico. The songwriter has not visited the country for five years, and his rapprochement with Mexican fans, who eagerly await the Grammy, Golden Globe, Oscar and Brit award winner, is becoming more and more noticeable.
Last Tuesday night, Sam Smith offered a concert in Austin, Texas, and lived an unexpected experience. Two of his fans, Olga and Thania, presented the “Unholy” singer with a personalized Dr. Simi.
This gesture not only reflected Sam Smith’s love for his fans, but also revived a custom that Mexicans popularized between 2021 and 2022: giving personalized stuffed animals to artists during their shows. This trend had lost steam due to restrictions imposed on several venues, but Olga and Thania’s gesture rekindled the flame.
The famous singer enthusiastically showed off his new stuffed animal, which sported iconic artist outfits characterized by metallic applications, latex and stylized materials designed by Harikrishnan Keezhathil Surendran Pillai.
On Instagram, Sam Smith shared a series of photos of the “Simi Smith” and thanked his Austin fans, “Olga and Thania made us some Simi Smith, so we wore it on stage tonight. Thank you Austin, that was amazing.”
Social networks were filled with comments and jokes from his followers, who celebrated the occurrence with phrases like “Sam, now you’re Mexican”, “He said, patriotic month and the one that screams”, “Dr. Simi has come a long way”, among others.
Calvin Harris and Sam Smith with new collaboration titled ‘Desire’.
The song reached the sixth spot on the Billboard US Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. It features a punchy beat with a catchy chorus, “You’re my desire, oh / And just thinking about you keeps me awake / You take me higher, oh / Take me,” ideal for dance floors.
Since then, an accompanying video was released showing a group of racers driving, as Smith sings and poses around a race car.
‘Desire’ marks Harris and Smith’s third collaboration together after ‘Promises’ and ‘I’m Not Here To Make Friends’, songs included on Smith’s latest album ‘Gloria’. Following the release of the collaboration, ‘Desire’ debuted in the UK Top 20 charts reaching number twelve and garnered over 18 million plays worldwide.
This success follows the recent release of ‘Miracle’, Harris’ collaborative single with Ellie Goulding. The 90s trance-inspired track marks the pair’s third work together after ‘I Need Your Love’ in 2012 and ‘Outside’ in 2014. Harris had hinted at the song in January by sharing a photo of him and Goulding in the studio.
‘Miracle’ reached the number one spot on the UK singles and dance music charts, staying at the top for eight consecutive weeks and in the OCC top 3 for 16 weeks.
