Keith Giffen wrote the classic phase of the Justice League and created the Blue Beetle, the protagonist of the movie with Bruna Marquezine.
Fans of Marvel and DC superhero comics were shocked after screenwriter Keith Giffen went public to announce his death. Known for his humorous comics, the 70-year-old comic book writer left a post ready on Facebook for when he died. The post was shared by his wife, without revealing the causes.
Giffen is the co-creator of characters such as Rocket, a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and Lobo, DC’s foul-mouthed and violent alien warrior. He wrote celebrated arcs for the Justice League and the Legion of Super-Heroes and was one of the minds behind some of the most acclaimed cosmic stories from both Marvel and DC.
Giffen attributed his own death to his decision not to attend the next edition of New York Comic Con, a pop culture convention scheduled to begin today (October 12).
The screenwriter wrote: “I said I was sick. Anything not to go to New York Comic Con. Thanks. Keith Giffen 1952-2023 Bwah ha ha ha ha”.
International websites have attributed Giffen’s death to a stroke. The information has not been confirmed by the screenwriter’s personal representatives.
“One last laugh! Thanks for everything and rest in peace!”, wished a fan in the comments section of Giffen’s “posthumous post”. “Very sad to hear the news… But this final post, extremely Keith Giffen!”, said another. “Missing you already, but glad you said goodbye on your own terms”, wrote someone else.
Co-created by Giffen, Lobo and Rocket are among the craziest characters to appear in Marvel and DC superhero comics. He was also one of the minds behind the conception of Jaime Reyes, the most recent version of the Blue Beetle, adapted for the cinema in a film starring Brazilian actress Bruna Marquezine.
Giffen was in Brazil in 2019 as a guest at the CCXP pop culture convention. His ‘Annihilation’ saga was the inspiration for much of what filmmaker James Gunn did in theaters with the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ trilogy.
