Goodbye cowboy: Jonathan Majors accused of violence by several women
This 2023 seemed to be the year of Jonathan Majors, as the actor debuted as Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (60%), and gave life to the villain in Creed III (90%). However, last March 25 he was arrested for allegedly punching his girlfriend, who called the police and was carrying blows to his face and neck. Now, Variety reports that “multiple alleged victims of abuse” by the actor are testifying against him.
Majors is scheduled to appear in court on May 8 on domestic violence charges, and this situation had already put him in hot water, as he has been fired from several projects, including two movies, and advertising campaigns for the U.S. Army and the Texas Rangers baseball team were canceled. According to Variety, sources close to the case have revealed that the actor’s alleged victims are cooperating with the Manhattan district attorney’s office.
Majors was also turned away by his advertising agency, and with this new information, things are not looking good. The first accusation came from his 30-year-old girlfriend, who, according to TMZ, said she was attacked when she wanted to check the actor’s cell phone, which had received a suspicious message that seemed to indicate infidelity.
Majors’ lawyer, Priya Chaudhry, was quick to respond to that news, saying he was the victim of an altercation with a woman going through an emotional crisis. That statement was released while Majors was behind bars. The lawyer’s husband, Andrew Bourke, works as her crisis publicist, and wanted to reinforce that his client was a victim, by sharing text messages from the raped woman (still unverified), which read “I told them it was my fault for trying to grab your phone,” and then added that it was not an attack:
So far Marvel has not commented on the matter, but if he loses his role as Kang the Conqueror, it will be a major blow to his career. Starting in 2017, the MeToo movement kicked off a global campaign against sexual violence and harassment, which gained popularity in October 2017 after several women accused film producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual abuse. Since then, the movement has led many people to share their own experiences of sexual violence and has led to increased awareness and policy changes around the world. Several famous actors and directors have been fired or faced consequences after being accused of sexual violence in the context of the MeToo movement, including Kevin Spacey , Louis C.K., and Brett Ratner, among others.
