GENEVA, Jan 18- An independent panel reviewing the global management of the COVID-19 pandemic said on Monday Chinese officials may have applied stronger public health measures in January and criticized the World Health Organization. (WHO) for not declaring an international emergency until the 30th of that month.

In an interim report, the expert panel, led by former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark and former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, said: “The global pandemic alert system is not fit for purpose.”

Furthermore, he added: “The World Health Organization has not had enough strength to do the job.”

He called for a “global reset” and said he would make recommendations in a final report to health ministers in May.
