The US Senate confirmed retired General Lloyd Austin as Secretary of Defense in Joe Biden’s new administration on Friday, becoming the first African-American to reach the Pentagon leadership.
Austin garnered overwhelming support from both Biden Democrats and opposition Republicans, despite requiring a special waiver from Congress for being a recently retired military man.
According to the regulations, an ex-military must be retired for more than seven years to be able to head the Defense portfolio.
