The main regulator of the United States government issued new recommendations related to the COVID-19 pandemic on Thursday, stating that the vaccination campaign has not met expectations.
The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) suggested that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) develop and make publicly available a comprehensive national coronavirus testing strategy that incorporates the six characteristics of an effective national strategy. Features include a clear purpose, risk assessment, and coordination.
“Such a strategy could build on existing documents that HHS has produced for the public and Congress to allow for a more coordinated pandemic testing approach,” the GAO wrote in its latest report.
The Department of Health should also create an expert committee that includes knowledgeable healthcare professionals from the public and private sectors, academia, and non-profit organizations or use an existing one to systematically review and report on and report on indicator standards of Health.
Additionally, GAO reaffirmed the importance of the Department of Health, with the support of the Department of Defense, establishing a time frame to document and share a national plan to distribute and administer the COVID-19 vaccine, and among other things , outline a plan for how efforts would be coordinated between federal agencies and non-federal entities. The GAO initially made the recommendation in September, but said it has not been fully implemented so far.
The office also recommends that the Food and Drug Administration ensure that the drug manufacturing data obtained is complete and accessible.
