The US federal government announced Thursday that it will begin the process of banning the sale and consumption of menthol cigarettes, as well as other flavored cigarettes.
Menthol cigarettes are expected to be completely off the market in about two years.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said that this action seeks to improve the health of the main consumers of these products, which largely include minors and the black community.
“With these actions, the FDA will reduce the initiation of consumption, increase the chances of quitting among active smokers, and prioritize the inequality faced by minorities, low-income communities, and LGBTQ, all of whom are members of the groups that more are consuming these tobacco products, ”FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock said in a statement.
The ban does not include menthol e-cigarettes.
