The lawyer of Donald Trump, Alina Habba told Newsmax’s Eric Bolling that her client, accused of inciting violence on Capitol Hill on January 6 of 2021, is prepared to testify for the riots before the House Select Committee because he has “nothing to hide”.
During the interview, she also stated that her client does not intend to follow the same path as his former White House adviser, Steve Bannon, who a couple of days ago was sentenced to four months in prison after being convicted of two counts of criminal contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with his January 6 subpoena.
The statements of the former president’s lawyer come days after the committee investigating the Capitol riots voted unanimously to subpoena Donald Trump to force him to testify under oath and provide documents related to his investigation.
“I have recommended that you cooperate because when you have nothing to hide, that is what I always recommend,” the lawyer said about the opinion she gave her client after the committee called.
The committee for its part has given Donald Trump the November 4 as the deadline to provide the requested documents and to appear for deposition testimony.
“(Trump) has no problem being deposed, even though the left-wing media would like to pretend he does. He has no problem being quoted and answering questions about what happened that day and he should do it,” added the lawyer.
Habba also referred to the message that Trump gave that day at the Ellipse in Washington, DC., where he asked his supporters to protest the 2020 election results because if they didn’t fight like “the devil” they would no longer have a country, “what he did was very public and in reality it was nothing more than saying that we leave in peace.”
Although Trump’s lawyer says her client is ready to testify, the former president has given no indication as to whether he will testify before the January 6 panel after he is subpoenaed, and if he does so, there is a very high possibility that he will appeal to the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions put to him at all times.
