A big explosion hit a nursing home in Pennsylvania on December 23, 2025. It happened at the Bristol Health & Rehab Center (also called Silver Lake Nursing Home) in Bristol Township, near Philadelphia.

At least two people died. Five others were missing as night fell, but some might have left with family. Many were hurt and taken to hospitals.

What Happened

The blast came around 2:17 p.m. local time. It caused part of the building to collapse and started a big fire. Flames shot out, and people got trapped inside.

Firefighters and police worked hard to save people. They used ladders, carried residents on their backs, and pulled them from windows, stairs, and elevators. Rescue teams used dogs and special tools to search the rubble for hours.

Witnesses said the sound was like a plane crashing. One neighbor saw people trying to run out as flames grew.

Possible Cause: Gas Leak

Authorities think a gas leak caused it. Workers from the gas company PECO were at the home checking a strong gas smell when the explosion hit. There was even a second smaller blast during the rescue.

Staff had smelled gas over the weekend too.

The Nursing Home

This home has 174 beds. It had problems before. State checks found issues like no fire extinguishers on some floors, bad storage of oxygen tanks, and poor safety plans. It got low scores on health inspections.

The home changed owners recently, in December 2025.

Community and Response

Governor Josh Shapiro called it a sad event, especially near Christmas. He thanked the brave rescuers and asked people to pray for the families.

The community is upset. Many residents are elderly and need care.

Search efforts went on into the night. Stay updated with official news for any changes.
