Heavy snow storms are causing big problems for air travel in the United States. More than 9,000 flights had delays or cancellations in recent days. This is happening during one of the busiest holiday travel times.
The storms hit hard in the Northeast, Midwest, and Great Lakes areas. Many people are trying to get home after Christmas.
Most Affected Areas
- New York City and nearby airports: JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark
- Boston
- Parts of Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Long Island (up to 19 cm of snow)
A new storm brought blizzard conditions to the Upper Midwest. Snow over 30 cm in some spots, with strong winds.
Why So Many Flight Problems
Winter storms bring snow, ice, and low visibility. Airlines cancel or delay flights to keep people safe.
On some days:
- Over 9,000 delays and hundreds of cancellations (mostly delays)
- Airports in New York and Boston had the most issues
Airlines like American, United, and JetBlue let passengers change flights for free.
Impact on Travelers
This is a peak travel week. Millions of people are flying. Roads also have jams and restrictions in some states.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul said safety comes first and asked people to be careful.
