Seven people were hospitalized in serious condition Saturday after suffering carbon monoxide poisoning at the Hampton Inn hotel in Ohio, according to authorities.

Nine people were admitted to local hospitals, Marysville Fire Chief Jay Riley told the Columbus Dispatch. The source of the carbon monoxide was unclear, but all those hospitalized had been in the hotel pool area, Riley said.

Among the victims were children and adults, he added. He did not specify the ages.

Authorities said they received a 911 call Saturday for a 2-year-old girl who had fallen into the pool or was found unconscious in the pool at the Hampton Inn in Marysville. More calls followed later about people who were unconscious or with symptoms such as dizziness and a burning throat, according to Marysville Police Chief Tony Brooks.

The hotel was evacuated shortly after. All of the injured were alive when they were transferred and seven of the patients were in critical condition, Brooks told the newspaper.

Two other people were treated at the scene and five more sought treatment on their own at a hospital, Brooks said.

The Dispatch was unable to locate hotel managers on Saturday night. Riley said there was a Hampton Inn maintenance crew on their way from out of state.

Marysville is about 30 miles (48 kilometers) northwest of Columbus.
