More than 20 states will raise their minimum wage next year. Here’s a list of the states with the biggest increases.
In the United States, 30 states and the District of Columbia have minimum wages higher than the national minimum of $7.25 per hour. Of these, more than 20 will raise their minimum wages next year, including California, Florida, Illinois, and New York.
The legislations in several states automatically set annual increases to the minimum wage, while others link their increases to the cost of living and inflation in order to protect workers’ purchasing power. Here are all the details, new amounts, and the exact date when the new minimum wages will take effect in each state.
The 3 states with the largest minimum wage increases in 2025
The U.S. states that will raise their respective minimum wages starting January 1, 2025, include Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, South Dakota, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington.
Among these, the states with the highest increases are Oklahoma and Delaware, which will raise their minimum wage by $1.75; Nebraska and Virginia, where the increase will be $1.50; and Alaska, where the wage will rise by $1.27. Here’s how much the minimum wage will increase in each state starting January 1, 2025:
- Alaska: from $11.73 to $13.00
- Arizona: from $14.35 to $14.70
- California: from $16.00 to $16.50
- Colorado: from $14.42 to $14.81
- Connecticut: from $15.69 to $16.35
- Delaware: from $13.25 to $15.00
- Illinois: from $14.00 to $15.00
- Maine: from $14.15 to $14.65
- Michigan: from $10.30 to $10.56
- Missouri: from $12.30 to $13.75
- Montana: from $10.30 to $10.55
- Nebraska: from $12.00 to $13.50
- New Jersey: from $15.00 to $15.49
- New York (In New York City and Long Island / Westchester): from $16.00 to $16.50
- New York: from $15.00 to $15.50
- Ohio: from $10.45 to $10.70
- Oklahoma: from $7.25 to $9.00
- Rhode Island: from $14.00 to $15.00
- South Dakota: from $11.20 to $11.50

Other states will raise the wage later in 2025
On the other hand, Michigan, Oregon, and the District of Columbia have scheduled increases for July next year, while Florida will raise its minimum wage in September 2025.
Michigan will raise the minimum wage starting July 1, from $10.56 to $12.48. The District of Columbia and Oregon have yet to confirm their new amounts. In Florida, on September 30, the state minimum wage will increase to $14. Other cities and counties also have scheduled increases for next year, either in January or July.
