Taxpayers eligible for pandemic tax refunds who have not yet claimed have until next year to do so.
In the midst of the coronavirus health contingency, some economic relief was approved in order to help low-income households have guaranteed income during the pandemic, these stimulus checks were by the government and distributed between 2020 and 2021.
Although many eligible households have already received these stimulus checks, there are still some eligible individuals who have not yet claimed these payments from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
This type of claim is called Refund Recovery Credit and, according to the entity, a deadline has been established in which it can be requested and here we tell you who and until what day they can make the claim.
Who is eligible to receive the Refund Recovery Credit?
According to the IRS people eligible for the 2020 Refund Recovery Credit must have some requirements such as:
- Have a Social Security number issued before the due date of the 2020 tax return.
- Be a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien in 2020.
- Not have been claimed as a dependent for the 2020 tax year.
Now, for those wishing to claim the 2021 Refund Recovery Credit they must meet the following requirements:
- Be a U.S. citizen or resident alien of the United States in 2021.
- Not have been claimed as a dependent of another taxpayer for the 2021 tax year.
- Have a Social Security number (SSN) issued before the due date of the tax return for tax year 2021.
- Have claimed a dependent with an SSN before the 2021 tax return due date or claimed a dependent with an Adoption
- Taxpayer Identification Number (ATIN).
- If the taxpayer is deceased in 2020 or 2021, dependents can make a claim for the appropriate year’s Refund Recovery Credit.
What are the deadlines for claiming the refund?
To claim payments for the Refund Recovery Credit, taxpayers need to have first filed both the 2020 and 2021 tax return depending on which is applicable.
In this case, the deadline to file the tax return and claim the Refund Recovery Credit for the 2020 tax year is May 17, 2024, while taxpayers will have until April 15, 2025 to file the 2021 tax return and claim the corresponding Refund Recovery Credit for that year.
It should be noted that taxpayers who did not receive any earned income during these tax years or who are not required by law to file taxes may make the refund claim when filing a return.
