Department of Education data details the Sunshine State’s colleges with the highest scores in 2021.
The SAT, or Scholastic Aptitude Test, has long been a crucial factor in the college admissions process in the United States. Although it is not the only selection criterion, an insufficiently low score can result in disqualification.
Today, several educational institutions across the country are reconsidering the weight they give the SAT in the admissions process, arguing that standardized tests such as this can disadvantage students from underprivileged families. However, in the state of Florida, many colleges still consider this test as an important part of their admissions process.
Here’s a list of Florida colleges whose students had the highest average scores in fall 2021, according to the most recent federal data available:
1. University of Miami – 1402
Stands out as the institution with the highest average Scholastic Aptitude Test score in the state of Florida in 2021. This private university is known for its Frost School of Music, which is one of the most innovative music schools in the United States.
2. University of Florida – 1385
One of the largest and most prestigious institutions in the state, it closely follows the University of Miami in terms of average SAT scores. It ranks third among the largest universities in the United States (with more than 87,000 students).
3. Florida Polytechnic University (Florida Polytechnic University) – 1295
In third place, we find Florida Polytechnic University. The only public university in the state dedicated exclusively to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) core programs, it offers degrees in areas of study that are critical to economic growth and job creation.
4. Florida State University – 1280
Florida State University is another institution that values the scores of the aforementioned assessment as part of its admissions process.
5. University of Central Florida – 1271
The University of Central Florida is known for its size, diversity and high academic standards in its admissions process.
Rounding out the top 10 universities in the SAT ranking are Florida Southern College with a score of 1268, Florida Institute of Technology with 1253, University of South Florida with 1245. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with 1240 and New College of Florida with 1236.
It is important to note that while these average scores provide an idea of the selectivity of each institution, they are not the only factor admissions considers when reviewing applications. Colleges evaluate applicants based on a variety of criteria, including grades, extracurricular activities, and letters of recommendation.
