The increased transmission capacity of the British variant of the coronavirus triggered the alarms of health authorities around the world. Its appearance has already been detected in several dozen countries and the latest scientific evidence on its characteristics has produced data that increase concern.

Recent scientific research has revealed that This new strain of the virus “is associated with a higher level of mortality”, as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, announced this Friday. Specifically, it has revealed that it is 30% more deadly than the original strain. This fact is coupled with a contagious capacity that exceeds that of the previously known strain.

“We were informed today that, in addition to spreading more rapidly, there now also appears to be some evidence that the new variant, identified in London and the South East, could be associated with a higher level of mortality.” Johnson said in an appearance before the media.

Vaccines are still effective

However, the British Prime Minister pointed out that currently existing vaccines are effective against this new version of the coronavirus. “All the evidence that we have shows that current vaccines are still effective against the old coronavirus and also against the new variant.”

In the same appearance, the Government’s main scientific advisor, Patrick Vallance, pointed out that the British variant is between 30% and 70% more contagious than the original, although the reasons are still unknown. In addition, the scientist assured that there is evidence that this variant involves a higher risk of death than the original, although he clarified that the “evidence is not yet strong”, as collected by the GLM agency.
