Washington, Mar 20 – The Government of the President of the United States, Joe Biden, enabled the Dallas Convention Center (Texas) to host 2,300 immigrant minors detained by the country’s authorities when they tried to cross the border from Mexico illegally, reported this Saturday the television network CNN.

At the moment, the arrival of 1,200 children and adolescents in the custody of Customs and Border Protection (CBP, in English) is expected shortly, after the admission of 200 minors on Wednesday.

The Dallas Convention Center is one of the largest in the country and has been adapted for this new role with a view to alleviating the situation at overflowing facilities at CBP on the border.

According to CNN, which cites a circular sent to local organizations by Catholic Charities Dallas, which is involved in this initiative, in that place there are toys and books for minors, where the authorities intend that no more than five days pass while their cases.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has provided 3,000 cots, 6,000 blankets and 36,000 liters of water.

The site has a sleeping and toilet area, as well as medical and laundry services.

More than 14,000 minor immigrants who crossed the border from Mexico alone remain in the custody of US government agencies, Biden Administration officials admitted Thursday.

In a phone call with journalists, these sources indicated that 9,562 children and adolescents remain in the care of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS, in English) and another 4,500 are guarded by CBP, which is in charge of the Border Patrol.

The arrival of immigrant minors in the United States has become a litmus test for the Biden Executive and is taking over part of the political debate in the country.

Government officials have stated, citing official figures, that until February, some 29,000 unaccompanied minors have been detained at the border this fiscal year, which began in October 2020.
