Biden calls the deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus irresponsible
U.S. President Joe Biden said that the transfer of nuclear weapons is a “totally irresponsible” move by Belarus and Russia.
U.S. President Joe Biden said over the weekend that the deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus by the Moscow authorities and President Alexander Lukashenko’s talk about the use of nuclear weapons was totally irresponsible in the midst of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The nuclear discourse is a blackmail maneuver widely used by the Russians since the beginning of the war.
Earlier this week, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko assured that he would not hesitate to use nuclear weapons delivered by Russia on his territory if his country is attacked by a foreign power. Moscow’s main ally indicated that Russian nuclear weapons would be close to arrive to his territory to prevent “some bastard from stepping on Belarusian soil”.
According to The Associated Press (AP), this move to host nuclear warheads is a response to a decision by Great Britain to provide Ukraine with armor-piercing shells containing uranium. In addition, Putin alleges that the United States is carrying out these same nuclear weapons actions in countries that are allies of Ukraine and the West, such as Germany, Turkey, Holland, Belgium, Italy and Greece.
In response, Biden stated that this is a “totally irresponsible” move by Belarus and Russia, while last Friday Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the first tactical nuclear weapons have already arrived in Belarus, and that the deployment of nuclear warheads will be completed by the end of this year at the latest.
The information that the Belarusians are now a nuclear-armed country had been public since last March and early April, when Lukashenko expressed his intentions to Putin that he was willing to have several Russian warheads on his territory. Therefore, he insisted that if his country is attacked, the response will be immediate. “I have already said it on several occasions,” he added.
