The president of the United States, Joe Biden, declared this Monday during the commemoration of the 200 years of the consummation of the independence of Mexico that this country is his “closest friend” and pledged to “strengthen and expand” this relationship.

“The United States has no closer friend than Mexico and I look forward to everything that our two nations will achieve together in the years to come,” he said in a video broadcast in the capital’s Zócalo during an event headed by the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Mexico celebrates this Monday the 200th anniversary of the consummation of its independence from Spain with a great event to which the Secretary of State of the United States, Antony Blinken, was invited, who recently canceled his visit.

The US president congratulated Mexicans for “this momentous anniversary” and assured that the peoples of Mexico and the United States have always been “united by shared values” and have learned that together they are “stronger.”

“My Government is committed to continue building on this basis to strengthen and expand relations between our peoples so that they benefit us all,” he said.

Biden stressed that weeks ago Mexico and the United States relaunched the high-level economic dialogue and said he was proud of the recently appointed US ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar.

He affirmed that the personal story of this diplomat, who has Mexican origin, is proof of “the depth and strength of the connections” between the two countries.

López Obrador maintained a close relationship with the former president of the United States, Donald Trump, which is why it took several weeks to recognize the electoral victory of Biden, with whom in recent weeks he has strengthened cooperation on immigration matters.

During the 200 years of independence event, speeches were delivered in person by representatives of the Governments of France, India, Serbia, Russia and the Vatican.

On September 27, 1821, the so-called “triumphal entry” of the Trigarante Army to Mexico City took place, in what is considered the consummation of independence.
