The president of the United States, Joe Biden , suggested this Wednesday that the judges of the Supreme Court, of the country who are inclined to revoke the right to abortion , are “extremists” and belong to what he defined as “MAGA people” in reference to the slogan of former President Donald Trump (2017-2021).
When asked about the controversy surrounding the right to abortion after a draft of a possible Supreme Court ruling was leaked on Monday, Biden linked the justices with the “MAGA people”, an acronym for “Make America Great Again” ( Let’s Make America Great Again), Trump’s campaign and presidency slogan.
“This crowd from MAGA is the most extremist political organization that has existed in the history of the United States,” said the president, who a few seconds later corrected himself by specifying that he was referring “in recent history.”
Biden also criticized the idea that the right to abortion is something that the Government (or the Constitution) has to “give” to citizens and defended, instead, that it is a right “inherent” to all people because they are “Children of God”.
On Tuesday, the US president already announced that his government is preparing a “response” to defend the right to abortion and assured that if the Supreme Court’s decision goes ahead with the draft, “it will be something very radical.”
The president has taken advantage of the controversy to call on citizens to go to the polls in the legislative elections in November and vote for candidates who support the right to abortion -fundamentally Democrats-, in order to be able to advance in Congress a federal legislation that shield this issue out of court.
On Monday, the Politico portal published a leaked draft ruling from the United States Supreme Court in which the court’s conservative majority is committed to overturning the 1973 ruling known as “Roe v. Wade” that protects as constitutional the right of women to abortion and therefore prevents the state from prohibiting this practice.
