The German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, invited Joe Biden to Germany “as soon as the pandemic allows it”, this Monday during her first telephone conversation since the US president was inaugurated, the government spokesman announced.

The leader, who will leave office after the legislative elections on September 26, told Biden that Germany is ready to “assume its responsibilities to fulfill international duties to European and transatlantic partners,” Steffen Seibert said in a statement.

The two policy makers also agreed that the fight against the covid-19 pandemic requires “reinforced international efforts,” he added.

Further, Merkel applauded Biden’s decisions to reintegrate her country into the Paris Climate Agreement and the World Health Organization (WHO), from which Washington had left on the orders of his predecessor, Donald Trump.

The two leaders also spoke on foreign policy issues, particularly those related to Afghanistan and Iran, and Merkel welcomed Biden’s decision to return the United States to the Paris Climate Agreement.

On the other hand, German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz welcomed the confirmation of Janet Yellen as Secretary of the Treasury by the US Senate and expressed the hope that it can make progress on an international corporate tax deal.

“Congratulations to the United States for making this excellent choice! Janet Yellen is a very impressive person, “said Scholz, adding that he is looking forward to working with the former chairman of the Federal Reserve.

Trump never visited Germany during his four years in office. Despite the fact that Germany and the United States tend to maintain close relations, Trump’s term was marked by a cold between Berlin and Washington.

The former president criticized Germany because, according to him, it contributed too little to NATO’s budget, and also because of its exports.

In July, He announced the withdrawal of 12,000 US soldiers stationed in Germany.
