The US Coast Guard intercepted a new boat with Cuban rafters who were trying to reach the US coast in order to seek a better future in the face of the difficult economic situation Cuba is experiencing.

In accordance with Globe Live Media, the 3 Cubans aboard the rustic boat had left Cuba 7 days ago and were spotted 5 miles east of Aventura, in South Florida.

Despite the several days at sea, exposed to dehydration and the inclement sun, it transpired that all Cubans are in good health, although they were treated by the medical personnel of a Coast Guard ship.

So far it is unknown whether the Cubans will be returned to Cuba, although the official procedure is for the migrants to be placed at the disposal of the US immigration authorities who have a deportation agreement with the Cuban government.

The number of Cuban rafters has increased in recent years

The number of Cubans who try to arrive illegally in the United States risking their lives in the seas of the Straits of Florida has increased in the months of this fiscal year that began last October.

The official statistics of the Seventh District of the United States Coast Guard indicate that since October 1, 2020 and to date, more than 75 Cubans have been intercepted in the vicinity of the Straits of Florida.

In the entire fiscal 2020 period, which began on October 1, 2019 and ended on September 30 of last year, a total of 49 Cubans were intercepted, which reflects an exponential increase.

Other rafters have not had the same fate and have died at sea. The children Luis Nestor Hernández Alfonso, 4 years old, and Kenna Mariana Rodríguez, 6 years old, along with their young mother Lisbethy Alfonso Aborresco, 28 years old, recently disappeared when the boat in which they were traveling suffered a shipwreck.
