NEW YORK – Former President Donald Trump arrived at the New York attorney general’s office Thursday for his second sworn deposition in a legal dispute over his company’s business practices, and his lawyer indicated that this time Trump will respond and not take cover under the Fifth Amendment to avoid incriminating himself.
“President Trump is not only willing, but eager to testify before the attorney general today,” the lawyer, Alina Habba, said in a statement. “He remains resolute in his stance that he has nothing to hide, and he is eager to educate the prosecutor about the immense success his multibillion-dollar company has enjoyed.”
Trump was meeting with lawyers working for Attorney General Letitia James, who sued Trump last year. In her lawsuit, James accuses Trump and his family of misleading banks and business associates by giving them false information about their net worth and the value of assets such as hotels and golf courses.
The lawsuit is unrelated to the criminal charges filed against Trump by the Manhattan U.S. attorney, which led to last week’s arraignment, the first time that has happened to a former U.S. president.
In a social media post Thursday morning, Trump called the lawsuit “ridiculous, just like every other Election Interference case brought against me.”
He waved with a raised fist as he left Trump Tower, arriving at the U.S. attorney’s headquarters at about 9:42 a.m.
James declined to answer a question about the session with Trump at a press conference on another topic Wednesday.
