One of the best things about Dragon Ball Super is that it brings new stories, characters, and battles for the enjoyment of millions of fans around the world. Toyotaro became the “heir” of Akira Toriyama and is responsible for drawing the sequel to Dragon Ball Z, an unforgettable series that has influenced several generations in different ways. And unsurprisingly, we have lots of fond memories of its many arcs and sagas.
However there is parts of the story Goku and his friends which over time ended up being relegated to the background. Especially with all that material that isn’t considered canon. The movies in the series have brought in some great beloved characters like Broly or Janemba, but… Why does no one remember Garlic Jr.?
Toyotaro recovers Garlic Jr. in a special way
- Garlic Jr. He was one of those Dragon Ball Z antagonists who stayed halfway between popularity and oblivion
- this villain debuted in the first official DBZ movie and he faced Goku, Krillin, Gohan and Piccolo in a battle with no quarter, but he was eventually defeated by them
- Later reappeared in the Dragon Ball Z anime himself with a mini bow who made a bridge between Frieza and Cell sagas
- Unfortunately for many, this character and his actions in the series are NOT canon
- However Toyotaro wanted to pay him a little tribute and, as part of his monthly illustrations, he dedicated a big drawing (via DBHypeName) that fans of the character will love
Who is your favorite non-canon villain from all of Dragon Ball?
This whole Garlic Jr. thing made me think of Akira Toriyama’s other series filler antagonists that I like. Of them all, my favorite has always been Broly, and since he’s now part of the series’ official canon, that position would be given to others like Android #13, Janemba or Bojack.
Which would you choose and why?
