NEW YORK – Residents of the Tri-State Area could experience gusty thunderstorms in some areas Tuesday afternoon, which could affect overnight travel with showers, hail and freezing precipitation.
And it doesn’t stop there. Mother Nature is expected to bring a mix of cold rain, sleet and snow over the next few days. Tuesday morning’s showers eased shortly after sunrise, but another round of showers are expected late afternoon and early Friday.
This storm line could bring thunder, hail, and graupel (the weather forecast calls for hail, freezing precipitation pellets), although damaging winds are considered the biggest threat at this point.

The system is clearing, ushering in dry, clear and cold weather through Wednesday morning. The next storm will move Wednesday afternoon.
This late afternoon system could bring a brief spell of snowfall, with noticeable flakes possibly even in New York City, which has not received measurable snow this winter, in the late afternoon and early Wednesday evening. Then we have a break, followed by mostly cold rain.
Those primarily north of the New Jersey-New York-Connecticut border are expected to see freezing rain and ice pellets.
Driving conditions in these regions, which cover places like Ulster, Dutchess, Sullivan and Pike counties, will be less than ideal during early Thursday morning commutes. Temperatures rise above freezing starting in the late morning, which will help melt any lingering ice.

From Sunday, we again have temperatures above those of the season. We’re tracking another storm system that could hit within a week, but right now it’s too difficult to predict how it might affect the tri-state area. For now, expect rain.
The latest weather forecast comes after some local points broke records on Thursday. Islip reached 71 (!!) degrees in the afternoon, well above the previous record of 59 degrees, set in 2018. Airports in New York and Bridgeport, Connecticut also set or equaled unprecedented heights.
