The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) on Tuesday offered a $20,000 reward for information about the murder of Richard Allen Jefferson Sr.
Jefferson, died aged 65, after being shot on September 19, 2018. The incident happened in the 600 block of West Peach Street in Compton.
“Upon arrival, deputies found the victim lying on the ground, apparently with gunshot wounds,” the sheriff’s department said in a statement. “The victim was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. The victim was well-liked in the community and investigators believe he was targeted solely because of his race.”
At a press conference held on Tuesday, LASD detectives asked for the community’s help to shed light on this homicide.
“Based on the information, Mr. Jefferson was alone at the scene, who was left in the midst of a senseless act of violence,” LASD Lt. Patricia Thomas said. “Investigators believe the suspect vehicle was occupied by gang members.”
Jefferson was the father of former NBA player Richard Jefferson Jr. who had a 17-year professional career and won the 2016 tournament with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016.
