As the country’s diversification continues to grow, WalletHub has compiled the most diverse cities in the United States by looking at household diversity and religious diversity, as well as socioeconomic diversity, cultural diversity, and economic diversity. WalletHub then tallied the scores in the top five diversity categories for the 501 largest cities across 13 metrics.
According to the study, among the most diverse major cities are New York and Jersey City.
The Big Apple was ranked No. 6 with an overall diversity score of 72.1, WalletHub determined. The overall ranking is based on your performance in certain categories. The city ranked 36th for socioeconomic diversity, 5th for cultural diversity, 313th for economic diversity, 155th for household diversity, and 159th for religious diversity.
Jersey City, New Jersey is the seventh most diverse city in the United States, with a diversity score of 72.02.
Jersey City, located across the Hudson River from New York City, is ranked 29th in Socioeconomic Diversity, 2nd in Cultural Diversity, 436th in Economic Cultural Diversity, 200th in Household Diversity, and 214th in religious diversity, according to WalletHub.
Jersey City also appears in an individual metric used to compile the rankings. According to WalletHub, the city is third overall with the most racial and ethnic diversity.
It also ranked as the second most linguistically diverse city in the country. While Clifton, New Jersey is the fourth most linguistically diverse city, according to the study.
Other cities in the tri-state area find themselves on individual measures, either ranking positively or ranking low.
WalletHub determined that the city of Camden, in southern New Jersey, is the third most diverse city by income in the county.
Meanwhile, Cheektowaga, New York, is the second least diverse city when it comes to residents’ birthplaces.
However, a city in New Jersey is among the most diverse cities when it comes to the occupations of its residents. Newark ranked fifth on that specific individual metric, according to the study.
Passaic, New Jersey, is the city with the fourth least age-diverse population, according to WalletHub.
Of the hundreds of cities ranked by WalletHub, which was named the most diverse? That honor goes to Gaithersburg, Maryland, with a diversity score of 73.09.
