U.S reached 28,327,996 confirmed cases of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and 504,819 deaths from covid-19 disease, according to the independent count from Johns Hopkins University.

This balance at 20.00 local time (01.00 GMT on Thursday) is 2,337 more deaths than on Tuesday and 71,836 new infections.

California is now the state hardest hit by the pandemic with 49,944 deaths, followed by New York (47,156), Texas (42,831), Florida (30,340), Pennsylvania (23,759), New Jersey (23,077) and Illinois (22,569)

Other states with large death toll include Ohio (17,058), Georgia (17,045), Michigan (16,389), Massachusetts (15,945) and Arizona (15,693).

In terms of infections, California has 3,544,536, followed by Texas with 2,623,692, third is Florida with 1,885,661, New York is fourth with 1,611,031 and Illinois is fifth with 1,179,248.

The provisional death toll -504,819- far exceeds the lower limit of the initial estimates of the White House, which in the best of cases projected between 100,000 and 240,000 deaths from the pandemic.

The new president of the United States, Joe Biden, has predicted that in total more than 600,000 people in the country will die from the virus.
