NEW YORK – A 7-year-old girl is fighting for her life in a Bronx hospital after being stabbed multiple times on Tuesday morning, New York police said. The minor’s grandmother has been charged with the crime, authorities said.
It all started when nearby neighbors Avenue Clinton there East 169th Street in the Morrisania neighborhood, they heard a scream around 8 a.m. on Tuesday, then saw something unthinkable: a girl lay motionless in the arms of a police officer, who found her unconscious after being called on site.
“Nobody wants to hear that a girl has been hurt, especially in their neighborhood, where their children go to school. Where they take care of the children. It’s terrible. Martinez said the officer took the girl in the patrol car and immediately left before an ambulance arrived.
Law enforcement sources told our sister channel NBC New York that a family member inside the house discovered that the girl had been stabbed multiple times in the chest and neck. The relative quickly called the police and told them that her mother had stabbed her niece, the sources said.
“Head to toe. Face down, he had blood everywhere,” Martinez said.
The girl was hospitalized in critical condition, police said, but is expected to survive.
Sources said the young victim lives in New Jersey and was in the Bronx to visit her grandmother. It is not known who dropped the girl off at home or where her parents were. Investigators recovered a knife from the apartment.
The grandmother was arrested by the police and taken to hospital for evaluation. The woman, who has not yet been identified, was later charged with attempted murder, according to police.
No other details were immediately available. An investigation is underway.
