TALLAHASSEE — Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is expected to enter the presidential race as early as mid-May, four Republican sources familiar with the talks told NBC News.
One of the sources pointed out that it will be an exploratory committee first and then the official launch.
Some of DeSantis’ supporters are urging him to declare as early as May 11, in an effort to counter the growing national narrative that former President Donald Trump is the overwhelming frontrunner for the 2024 Republican nomination. Others, however, in the governor’s orbit argue that date would be too soon, say two of those sources. All agreed, however, that mid-May is the goal.
DeSantis, long considered Trump’s strongest Republican challenger in 2024, has traveled far beyond Florida in recent weeks to raise awareness. But some of DeSantis’ allies have begun to question his preparedness as his polling numbers have lagged.
