The Atlanta District Attorney’s Office (Georgia, EU) revealed this Tuesday that it is investigating 16 people who in 2020 falsified electoral documentation to try to alter the results of the presidential elections in that state in favor of the then president. Donald Trump (2017-2021).
In documents presented to the Court, the prosecution explained that it has initiated a criminal investigation against these 16 individuals for signing an unofficial electoral certificate with the aim of pretending to be legitimate representatives of the popular will and supporting Trump against the real winner of the elections in that state: the current president, Joe Biden.
In early July, a grand jury linked to this same investigation into whether Trump interfered in the 2020 general election in Georgia subpoenaed the then president’s former personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani; to the senator from South Carolina Lindsey Graham and other allies of the former president.
These include John Eastman, Cleta Mitchell, Kenneth Chesebro and Jenna Ellis, who reportedly advised Trump to overturn the outcome of the elections in Georgia and other key states.
The citations were signed by Fulton County Superior Court Judge, Robert McBurney who oversees the work of the grand jury, made up of 23 people.
Giuliani, who was mayor of New York and one of Trump’s main supporters during his term, was at the forefront of judicial attempts to annul the results of the last presidential election, which finally gave victory to Democrat Joe Biden.
As of late 2020, Giuliani testified before Georgia lawmakers three times about these efforts.
Earlier this year, the Fulton County Prosecutor, Fani Willis formally requested the creation of a grand jury to collect evidence and investigate whether Trump and others intervened in the November 2020 presidential election.
This investigation runs parallel to the investigations carried out by a commission of the country’s Lower House, which over the past few weeks has held several public hearings with witnesses, who have testified about Trump’s efforts to revoke the presidential elections and about his involvement in the assault on the Capitol in January 2021.
