The fight of George Floyd with three officers trying to arrest him, seen in a video recorded by a policeman’s body camera, included screams of panic saying: “I’m sorry, I’m sorry” and “I’m claustrophobic.”

At the same time the authorities were trying to push him into the back of a police van.

At one point, Floyd moves forward, pulling the upper body out of the vehicle. The cops finally give in and Floyd thanks them, and then they take him to the floor, face down and in shackles.

Officer Derek Chauvin’s knee immobilizes his neck, another policeman’s back, and a third grabs his legs, while they talk quietly about whether he might have used drugs.

“I was not getting out of the car. I was just not following instructions,” said police officer Thomas Lane according to the recording.

The officer also asked twice if his companions should not turn him on his side, and later noted that he believed that Floyd was passing out. Another touched Floyd’s wrist to find his pulse and said he couldn’t find it.

The police video is part of the images and testimonies of witnesses exposed on Wednesday in the trial of Chauvin, who is accused of murder and involuntary manslaughter for the death of Floyd, showing how his attempt to pay with a fake $20 bill at a neighborhood grocery store last May turned into a documented tragedy step by step.

A security camera scene of people joking inside the store soon gave way to images of the police pulling out Floyd, who was black, from his truck at gunpoint.

The agent’s extensive body camera footage gave the jury the most complete picture to date of the roughly 20 minutes that elapsed between the time they first approached Floyd’s car and the moment he got into an ambulance.

When paramedics took Floyd, Charles McMillian, a 61-year-old passerby who recognized Chauvin from the neighborhood, told the agent that he did not respect what he had done.

“That’s a personal opinion,” Chauvin replied according to the recording. “We had to control this guy because he’s a big guy and it looks like he could have consumed something.”

Floyd was 6 feet 4 inches (1.93 meters) tall and weighed 223 pounds (101 kilograms), according to an autopsy, which found fentanyl and methamphetamine on his body. According to Chauvin’s attorney, the police officer is 5 feet 9 inches (1.75 meters) tall and weighs 140 pounds (63.5 kilos).

Chauvin, 45, who is white, is charged with murder and manslaughter in the death of Floyd, 46, by pressing his neck with his knee for 9 minutes and 29 seconds while he lay face down and handcuffed. The most serious charge against the now ex-police officer carries a penalty of up to 40 years in prison.

The death of Floyd, in addition to the heartbreaking video of a pedestrian asking to be allowed to breathe as those present yell at Chauvin to stop, sparked protests around the world and sparked a nationwide discussion about racism and police brutality.

The defense alleges that Chauvin did what he was trained to do and that the death of Floyd It was not caused by the officer’s knee, as the prosecution claims, but by the use of illegal drugs, heart problems and hypertension, and the adrenaline rushing through Floyd’s body.
