NEW YORK — A Manhattan woman was shot dead Wednesday after she tried to be the peacemaker in a domestic violence dispute between her neighbors, authorities say.
The incident happened at the Lincoln Houses located on 135th Street in East Harlem. The woman, identified as a 41-year-old Puerto Rican mother, was shot on the sixth floor of building number 60.
The shooting happened after the victim and her husband approached the suspected gunman outside his apartment. It was then that the suspect pulled out a handgun and opened fire, striking the woman four times in the face, stomach and back.
The suspect fled after the shooting started.
Authorities at the scene told Telemundo 47 that the weapon in question had not been recovered from the scene and that the suspected shooter would still be armed and dangerous.
A neighbor of the victim described her as a “good woman” and said the victim’s children also witnessed the shooting.
Responding officers located a three-year-old boy in the apartment where the domestic dispute took place, according to police sources. The child was unharmed.
The 41-year-old woman was taken to hospital in Harlem with serious injuries.
