A crash that left one person seriously injured forced the closure of the southbound lanes of the tollway in northwest Miami-Dade.
Aerial footage from Telemundo 51 showed the crash happened shortly after 5 a.m. in the southbound lanes near the Northwest Miami-Dade 199th Street exit.
At least one car could be seen with severe damage on the side of the road, while a helicopter and numerous Florida Fire and Highway Patrol (FHP) units were on the scene.
According to the FHP report, a white Chevy Camaro was traveling northbound in the southbound (incorrect) lanes of the tollway in the Northwest 199th Street area. The Chevy collided head-on with a southbound silver Toyota pickup.
According to FHP, the driver of the Chevy, an adult male, was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center with serious injuries, while the driver of the Toyota suffered minor injuries.
The highway was temporarily closed for the air rescue helicopter landing and is expected to reopen early in the morning, according to FHP.
Drivers are advised to avoid the area for much of the morning rush hour while an investigation continues.
