Cuban-American Senator Marco Rubio welcomed the fact that the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) granted precautionary measures of protection to the independent Cuban journalist Yoe Suárez.

The Republican senator for the state of Florida described the decision as “important”, since the situation of the journalist from Cuban newspaper it is serious and risky.

Through his social networks, Rubio pointed out that Suárez “has been a victim of the repressive wave of the Castro and Díaz-Canel regime for the simple fact of telling the truth.”

A few days ago, the IACHR warned through a statement that Suárez is being threatened, harassed, intimidated, and detained by State Security for dedicating himself to his journalistic work.

In that sense, he considered it pertinent to declare precautionary measures for him and his family, a rather symbolic action, since the Cuban government was asked to “protect the life and integrity” of Suárez and his relatives, although it is the government itself that threatens said integrity. .

The IACHR demanded that the regime “adopt the necessary measures so that Mr. Yoel Suárez Fernández can carry out his activities as an independent journalist without being subjected to acts of violence, intimidation, harassment and detention in the performance of his duties. The foregoing includes the adoption of measures so that he can exercise his freedom of expression”.

This petition is also symbolic in nature, although according to Rubio, the recognition of these cases by international organizations helps to visualize them and thus make it clear that it is the Cuban regime that does not agree to cooperate and restricts the freedoms of its members. citizens.

Rubio is one of the most active US officials on human rights issues in Cuba.

At the beginning of March, the Republican senator spoke out against the Human Rights Council of the United Nations (UN), demanding that the violations committed by the Cuban government, which is even part of the Commission of Human Rights of the body.

“Outrageous and traumatic have been the human rights violations against the free press and Cuban activists who are subjected to police surveillance and arbitrary arrests by the regime. What are these phony UN HRC members afraid of? ”The Republican questioned on his official Twitter account at the time.
